John “Smiley” Andrews, an amazing community member and Pride Center volunteer passed away on September 6th. John had a bright energy, radiant smile and compassionate heart that lit up the Pride Center and whatever space he entered. This reputation for bringing sunshine wherever he went was why he was lovingly nicknamed “Smiley”.
John volunteered to support many community events and projects including our Oral Histories Project with NDNU and you can learn more about his story of self-discovery, incredible resilience and fierce community activism here: https://queerinsmc.org/story/john-andrews-oral-history/
In addition to his selfless commitment to LGBTQ+ community and spaces, John was a master gardener. He had an effortless confidence with nature and cultivated beauty in whatever project he picked up.
We at the Pride Center loved, admired and have deep respect for John. We’re grateful for all he did to support us as we opened the space 2 years ago. John was one of a kind and we miss him dearly.
His loved ones will be holding a garden stroll at the historic Filoli House to honor John: Garden Stroll and Open House to honor John Andrews
